MONTHLY MEETING & PRESENTATION

No mini-contest for this meeting

Joyce and Frank Burek from Sea Sports Scuba will present their exceptional audiovisual program on land and marine nature photography, called “Two Different Worlds.”

The Bureks are nature photographers who have been avidly pursuing their craft for over 35 years.  One of their primary interests is the marine environment, a major focus since they received their diving certifications in 1980.  From that time, they have together logged over 1,800 photographic dives and shot over 3,600 rolls of film underwater, using both Nikonos and Nikon-housed N90s camera systems.  They also augment their film photography with a Fuji S-2 digital camera.  All total, counting both land and marine photography, their slide collection is over 100,000 images.  

Their photos have appeared in aquarium exhibits, calendars, brochures, books, magazines, newspapers and posters with numerous publishers -- including Audubon Society, National Geographic Society, and the National Wildlife Federation. In 2000 they were recognized by NOAA with its "Environmental Hero Award" for their Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary (FGNMS) photographic work.  Their work is featured in the current FGNMS brochure.

Joyce and Frank are authors and publishers of three computer-based marine identification products -- the Marine Life of the Flower Garden Banks NMS CD-ROM, Marine Life of the Bay Islands of Honduras CD-ROM, and the Marine Life of Indonesia featuring Wakatobi Marine Reserve.  

With “Two Different Worlds,” the Bureks explore the planet Earth in a scenic trip that compares and contrasts the wonders of our Planet Earth above and below the waves -- from mountains to prairies, forests to deserts, streams to oceans, lions to lionfish, the adventure continues.

Join us for a trip to downtown Houston for night life and dinner together. Come Monday night to our regular meeting to get the details.

TOWN CENTER PHOTO OP

The Woodlands' Town Center Improvement District wants our club members to create beautiful images of the Town Center area for them to publish (with credits) in brochures, post cards, calendars, posters, etc. Best pictures chosen will win cash awards. Look for guidelines coming soon.

SHOOT FOR THE FALL PHOTO SHOW & COMPETITION — Professional Portfolios

Hope you're all busy shooting for this very special competition, in which your entries must be 3-5 matted and/or framed images that work together in a common theme.  Click here to see the competition rules and procedures.

One of our talented members, Dot Mullinax, will present a fascinating slide show on TASMANIA.  The mini-contest will be your downtown photos from the September field trip.

SIGN UP NOW for this special club trip to the Lost Maples park where the best leaf colors in Texas often appear, just a-hanging there waiting for us to capture those incredible images.

MONTHLY MEETING & PRESENTATION

Cathy Adams Clark, one of our members and a professional photographer/instructor, will judge and critique all portfolio entries from our Fall Photo Show & Competition, with awards to be handed out following her critiques.  We always appreciate her sharp insights and constructive suggestions.  No mini-contest that night.

PORTFOLIO ENTRIES PICKUP
Saturday, December 6 -- 9:30 to 11 A.M. at The Library

Please be sure to be there during that time period.  Any member portfolios that entrants don't pick up by 11 A.M. become an unfair burden on the contest comittee and will be given to our traveling member Roy Varner, who likes such things.

We're planning some great activity in December, including a big public slide show to showcase members' images and our promote our club to the entire greater-Woodlands community.

We need club members who have digital cameras to volunteer to document our field trips and special events. Our friend John Masters has been providing digital images of our meeting presenters and other activities but could use some help.  If you are willing to help, please email this newsletter editor.
